I never knew of a parallel world in waters like ours. My first experience was snorkeling on an island and was super excited to see white boulders in different shapes and forms, only to be told later that they are dead corals. I was bewildered and got to know that the island was a commercial island and had a lot of tourist activities due to which the ocean shores warm up and kill the Corals. Yes! Coral reefs are endangered due to overfishing, climate change, and ocean acidification. Artificial intelligence provides opportunities to solve this issue.
One such example is the Project: CORaiL, an artificial intelligence-powered system based on the domain of computer vision, it observes, classifies, and measures marine life. Strategically placed smart cameras, installed underwater and equipped with the Video Analytics Services Platform (VASP) and Intel hardware, allows non-invasive observations. The cameras detect and photograph marine life and deep learning algorithms are applied to count and classify the corals which are further analyzed.
AI-based Robots are another innovative way to clean coral reefs with minimum damage using Mapping, Classifying, and Cleaning. Coral reefs can be located using reinforcement learning followed by the identification of plastic and other wastes and then cleaned with minimum damage to corals.
These use cases of AI are positively impacting the 14th Sustainable Development Goal – Life Below Sea which focuses on conserving and sustainably using the oceans, seas, and marine resources. These SDGs are a part of our curriculum in some way or the other. It becomes imperative that we can introduction the students to these initiatives and make them realize the real-life implication of AI for solving real-world pressing issues.
